The word machinima is the abbreviation of machine cinema. This is a technique to make videos and films in three-dimensional animation than does not require an elaboration of rendering, but exploits the environments and the characters of video games and virtual worlds in real-time recording.

As for virtual worlds, the most used environments are those of Second Life, the online multiuser platform created by the american society Linden Lab. The expressive capacity of the machinima technique, the use of avatar actors, the ease of building virtual sets in Second Life, it opens a new frontier of future cinema.
